Meet the Candidates

Damion Square

Candidate President

As President of AS, my main priority will be the overall well-being of students in general, and the restoration of historically marginalized student groups on SFSU campus in particular. My goal as AS President is to uplift, empower, and redignify students who have been systemically placed on the bottom, and provide them with the academic, political, social, and economic equity that will allow them to adequately compete with their peers on all levels, which will inevitably benefit the entire student body collective. There are students on SFSU campus who are undoubtedly suffering through gentrification, economic hardships, racism, homophobia, and other forms of discrimination that do not make them feel safe on SFSU campus. To make matters worse, we are suffering in silence, and we are “sick and tired of being sick and tired”. The time to speak up is NOW! The time for your voice to be heard is NOW! The time for your presence to be felt in a way that will reverberate throughout the campus, administration, faculty, and staff so that they know and never forget whose campus this truly is..is NOW! Vote for me, and let’s take back what is rightfully ours..by any means necessary.

hello Gators !! It is an honor to be standing for the post of President of San Francisco State University. I have been actively leading 3 on-campus organizations which have polished my leadership skills and made me passionate about serving the student community with resources they need to excel. My candidacy as the representative of this team strictly holds a broad strategy which includes teamwork, hard work, and dedication. Being a student in the community I have come to knowledge of the need of a better organization which can provide chances to students who are introverted and reluctant, in general to get rid of the barrier of shyness of it all, I want to be there for my fellow mates to help them put their brain and talent forward. My ultimate goal will be to show the importance of establishing a strong leadership in the SFSU community as a whole and to show people what we hardworking, dedicated and united minds can bring to the table.

Candidate President

Fernando Lorenzo

Candidate President

As your representative, I will make substantial efforts to ensure a transparent, peaceful and influential administration. A general without an army isn’t a general. Assuming my presidency is accepted, I will immediately hold a press-conference to address the new student body and describe the changes I hope to enact. People must know what is going on. The priorities of my administration will depend on the school’s current economic, social, political, and geographical climate. If an issue arises, swift action will be taken to find a fair resolution. We must prioritize establishing SFSU as a great power on the global map. I will open up trade with local and international businesses to further enrich opportunities for every person and work to eliminate communication barriers in our school. Everyone deserves a chance to succeed and become an influential player in the land of global creativity known as Silicon Valley.

I am proud of and want to continue the work I have done as Vice President, External Affairs in Associated Students and as Civic Engagement Officer of the California State Student Association. In this role we quadrupled voter turnout of on campus voters in the midterm election, brought a National Student Leadership Diversity Conference to SF State and developed a lobbying campaign for financial aid reform. In the coming year, I want to enhance our programs to provide better support to Queer and Trans students seeking refuge at SF State. I will work to increase the minimum wage on campus to $15/hr and increase the number of on campus job and internship opportunities. I want to bring greater recognition to the College of Ethnic Studies now that Ethnic Studies is now required for High School graduation. I will work to increase the amount of financial aid available to students at SF State to afford the high cost of living in San Francisco. I want to provide better support to first year and transfer students in adjusting to and navigating the university environment to help them access the appropriate programs and services that will remove the obstacles to success. I will work to ensure a fully functioning Associated Students organization with diverse and inclusive student leadership. Most of all I promise to listen to students to be the best advocate that I can while helping to lift up their voices as much as possible.

Candidate President

Andrew Carrillo

Candidate VP of Finance

Hello, fellow Gators! My name is Andrew Carrillo and I am interested in becoming your Vice President of Finance. Through my years of service in student government, local city government as a legislative intern, and in Residential Life as a Community Assistant, I have always been an advocate for my peers. Advocacy and integrity are the core principles I plan on bringing to the position if I have the honor to represent my fellow gators. If elected I will advocate for greater resources for the many Orgs that make SFSU the powerful University we are today. The Orgs are the foundations of our University and it is the duty of AS to provide the necessary support for them. Associated Students fundamental role must be advocacy. If elected VP I will always be that advocate for the students. I believe transparency is needed in regards to the budget, students should know where their money is going and be proud that their money is helping create a rich and diverse social atmosphere here on campus. I believe a rebranding of AS is needed, AS has to get back to its grassroots advocacy that helped make this university a beacon of progress. We grow by lifting our peers up, If I have the honor of becoming Vice President of Finance I will ensure that change is not discouraged, that transparency and advocacy are in our core mission, and that we strive the better the lives of our fellow students here on campus.

I am running for Vice President of Finance because I am proud to go to SFSU and would love to be part of the student government team. Finance is my major and passion and I am very interested in a leadership position to learn and to teach others. I will think of the entire campus and what benefits all, not just a specific group of people. SFSU is already a very inclusive school, and with me on the team. I hope to promote learning and wellbeing on campus. I will take the time that is needed to truly learn what different colleges are lacking, and what they like in order to make changes. I would love to not only be a leader, but to also be a team member and continue to improve the school that I am already very proud to be a part of. Thank you for the opportunity, and I hope to get your vote as Vice President of Finance!

Candidate VP of Finance

Zemaye Jacobs

Candidate VP of Social Justice & Equity

It’s our time to regain our agency as students of San Francisco State University. With so many transitions in our administration and community, we have the power to influence impactful, inclusive change.

What’s up, Gators! I’m Zemaye — proud Black Student Union Member since 2016, Guardian Scholars Program Ambassador President, former ASI intern, and third year Communications Studies Major and Africana Studies Minor. Having fully immersed myself as a leader in our campus community, I see a disparity amongst the diversity of our students. I am running for Vice President of Social Justice and Equity because I want to address the lack of wrap-around support and retention of marginalized groups at SFSU. As a Black woman and former foster youth, I know that true diversity does not come from tokenizing, but from allowing everyone a seat at the table.

My goals in this role are:

To share and establish more student focused resources.

To implement identity based student groups and orientations.

Encourage direct outreach between students, staff, faculty, and administrators.

Commit myself fully to the voices and success of all students.

While SFSU’s history is built on advocacy and integrity, it does not uphold these values to the fullest. By mobilizing and creating an environment that is inclusive through all intersections of identities, we can continue the legacy of student led social change. I inspire to lead by example and be the voice that echoes our demands. Let’s stand in solidarity. With your support, I can be a voice for you.

I am Akash Sheladiya, Computer Science major as a junior year at San Francisco State University. I am standing for Vice President of social justice and equity for the election term 2019. The committee of students, faculty, and staff strives to promote knowledge and understanding among all members of the San Francisco State University community about issues of diversity, inclusion, social justice, and equity.

San Francisco State University values the dignity and sacred worth of all members of our community. To achieve this end, the Social Justice and Equity Committee engages diverse members of SFSU in meaningful activities to promote positive and sustained relationships among all persons inclusive of race/ethnicity, gender, religion, social class, sexuality, and all other aspects of the human experience.

I am here to apply for this candidacy to increase awareness on social justice and equity at our campus. Being in this position I want to attainable to my fellow teammates, students and the staff, by being so I would be open to express myself more as a team member during discussions and projects.  I would like to also like to focus on better management of the student/public gatherings and events that take place on campus.

I mean to respect all races, genders, nationalities, sexes and communities regardless of me being in this position or not. All in all, in this time where we all need to be united and peaceful my main goal would be to increase and maintain peace between the SFSU community.

Akash Sheladiya

Candidate VP of Social Justice & Equity

Ivy Tran

Candidate VP of Internal Affairs

Hey, gators! My name is Ivy Tran and I am running to be your next AS VP of Internal Affairs for the 2019-2020 academic year. I’m currently a 3rd year B.S. Chemistry major and currently serve as the College of Science and Engineering Representative and Corporate Secretary for the Board of Directors(BOD). I previously served as the Freshman Class representative from Feb ‘17-Dec ‘17, spanning two other Board of Directors. I also have been involved in Health Promotion & Wellness as an Ambassador and currently as the Lead Ambassador for CalFresh, doing an outreach program to help others apply for CalFresh. I previously was an intern for The Depot as well. I have continually displayed a passion for serving the student and campus community through programs that aim to enhance the co-curricular student experience and I’d love to continue serving the students of SFSU in a greater capacity. As VP of Internal Affairs, I’d like to maintain the momentum of improving and innovating on the AS infrastructure that will ultimately help AS grow and operate at its best in order to serve our students the best. I’d like to see AS push themselves as well as the University to be more transparent, have better communication and shared governance, and lift student voices instead of lifting their own voices. I’d love to help the BOD become as efficient as they can be and become allies that share the space instead of taking it over. I hope you consider me!

My name is Jennifer Ramirez Beltran and I am a third year at San Francisco State University, majoring in Psychology. I am passionate about assisting my community and being able to provide knowledge regarding resources that are inexpensive and those that benefit an individual’s success.

SFSU campus thankfully is diverse and changes as the students evolve. It is important to accommodate to the student’s needs. As a current position holder, of treasurer and commissioner of social affairs, in Sigma Omega Nu Latina Interest Sorority Inc. I have a sense of money management and creating events that collaborate with other organizations. I would be able to bring to the workspace: good energy, encouragement, and creativity.

One of my main goals is to bring more mental health resources on campus. Often times the resources that are offered are not always available for the students, this is a problem I would love to solve.

Alondra Esquivel Garcia

Candidate VP of External Affairs

Hello Fellow Gators.  I am Alondra Esquivel Garcia, and I am running for Associated Students Vice-President of External Affairs. During my time at San Francisco State University, I have learned that a students voice is the most important thing to create change within higher education and fix financial barriers. By getting students more involved in legislative efforts by amplifying the students’ voice, we can fix financial aid and make higher education more accessible. From students from the Third World Liberation movement to students now in 2019, I have learned that being a student activist and getting students involved in those efforts does create significant change.  “We must rise by lifting others” has been something I have been doing all my life and will want to continue till the end. If elected, I would want to be more transparent with our student population on issues that affect them and others around the community. Getting all students more involved on and off campus will also be an effort I am willing to make. I will fight to ensure better opportunities for all students. I am ready to give it my all to serve the 30,000 students at San Francisco State.

First of all, I believe in AS mission which is to prepare and support SFSU students. And that is the same as my own purpose. I love SFSU and I am fond of helping others. So being the candidate, I coule contribute to SFSU and support colleagues.

I want to apply for the External Affair Vice President as I am experienced and skillful. And I want to achieve my mission. I am the pro with leadership skills, public speaking, communication, project planning, and managing. I have the certification of GLO Leader issued by Berkeley and Entry Level for Public Speaking. I was the External Affair president for an organization for 2 years; the supervisor for a teenager winter camp in Delphi Academy of Los Angeles.  In the meanwhile, I have networking with people in AAU, Berkeley, USF, and CC which benefit me be the External Affair Vice President.

My mission is driving SFSU people changing the world. So my goal is to let SFSU people find out their own special. We will compete and network with the best people. I will hold competitions with schools in various fields such: coding, debate, design, catwalk and sports etc. I will hold summit and banquet with the top companies. I will also set up programs with companies. I will dedicate all myself for AS and SFSU.

Romel Harmon

Candidate College of Education Rep

I am running for re-election for the position of Graduate College of Education Representative to continue to serve my constituents with the same level of commitment and enthusiasm that I developed, and continue to develop, during my current term of office. It would be an honor for me to continue to serve as the voice of my constituents in the governmental processes at SFSU. I look forward to engaging with the student body for the purpose of generating and developing ideas that enrich and enliven the academic experience on campus, within the community, and through mutually beneficial collaborations with local city government.

As such, I feel it necessary to assume a leadership role that allows me the opportunity to promote student life programs based on socially just principles and inclusive philosophies that empower and enable. My candidacy as the representative of this team strictly holds a broad strategy which includes leadership, teamwork, hard work, peer understanding and dedication. I believe that here at State we need more chances of involvement in Education Community, thus my goal would be to plan and introduce more enjoyable and intriguing opportunities for students who are interested. Since I have been an active part of the community and also have been part of the multiple on-campus clubs which has boosted my confidence and polished my leadership skills. Being a normal student in the community I have come to knowledge of the need of a better organization which can provide chances to students who are introvert in public and are reluctant to participate.

Aakash Shantilal Thesiya

Candidate College of Education Rep

Francisco Lazo

Candidate College of Business Rep

If elected I would try and increase the number of academic counselors for the school of business. Furthermore I would try and throw more mixers for current students to meet with successful sfsu business alumni to look into job opportunities and to gain an understanding of the path to success after graduating from sfsu. Ultimately I would do everything I can to make the college of business more sauce in general.

If elected to be HSS Representative, I will seek to improve the educational experience for all students. I believe that through engagement in course material beyond readings students can become more involved in their field and yield a more meaningful and thoughtful learning experience. I plan to be part of a team that can help improve students’ struggles in finances, education and security on campus by any means I can. I believe my tenaciousness and dedication to servicing the SFSU community would be essential as I would listen to every possible option available and weigh decision based on the best information and outcome obtainable. My name is David Harvey, I am a Computer Science major, and this is my sophomore year here at SF State. My platform will be based on working with students to create a solution on providing shelter for all students, and advocating for a permanent food pantry on campus.I have been going to the food pantry at the Annex building regularly since my freshman year, and It is clear as day that food insecurity and students not having adequate shelter is a growing problem, where a solution needs to be created now. No student on this campus should  have to struggle to put food in their bellies or worry about where they will be able to rest their heads at night. I will not rest on fighting for this issues here at SF State.Go Gators!!!!!

Over the past two years, I’ve had the privilege of attending San Francisco State University, and during this time, I continue to learn new things, interact with an incredibly diverse body of students, and grow exponentially as a person. My name is Joshua Ochoa, I’m majoring in Political Science and Urban Studies, and I’m running to be the next Representative for the College of Liberal and Creative Arts.

Since October, I’ve had the opportunity to serve as the RHA Representative, which has taught me much of what it means to be a student leader, and how best to listen to the voices and concerns of our students.

Nothing would make me more proud than to be able to represent the College of LCA, with so many diverse students, departments, organizations, and professors. I promise to listen and stand up for all students, and oppose those that go against our interests towards education, equity, and progress.

As the next LCA College Representative, I aim to:

– Amplify student voices, so they’re heard by AS and the university, especially with issues like the 2035 Campus Plan and presidential search.

– Increase the amount of resources for LCA clubs and departments.

– Maximize interactions between AS and the student body, especially with voter turnout during elections.

– Work with administration to try and lower parking costs and extend library hours.

I know that if we work together, there is nothing we cannot accomplish! Thank you so much, and vote for Joshua Ochoa for LCA Representative!
