18 Mar Meet Your Board: Naeemah Charles

Hey gators! This week we would like to introduce you to your VP of External Affairs, Naeemah Charles! Naeemah is responsible for serving as the primary representative for AS before the California State Students Association, United States Student Association, boards, commissions, and other policymaking groups. Overall, Naeemah serves as a your student body voice on important decisions that will affect you and your fellow gators.

What inspired you to run for office?

I was inspired to run for office because I was frustrated with the current state of higher education. According to California’s Master Plan for Higher Education, earning a college degree in CA should be tuition-free. The fact that tuition has risen by such a drastic amount since the 2008 recession was alarming to me and I wanted to ensure that I was able to advocate for affordable higher education. Being the Vice President of External Affairs allowed me to have a platform to help improve the state of the CSU system.

What do you love most about your position?

I love being able to ensure that students have a voice in the decision making process. Having a voice on subjects such as sexual assault prevention, financial aid, diversity, ethnic studies courses, and funding for higher education are just a few of the wide-array of topics that are discussed at the legislative level. These issues are extremely important to myself, as well as every student on campus. Therefore, it is extremely important to me that students are able to have their voice heard at every level of government. I love that my job allows me to ensure that the needs and values of SF State students are heard by our representatives.

If you had to pick any artist’s concert to attend (dead or alive) who would you want to see?

If I had to pick an artist’s concert it would have to be…Whitney Houston!

Pick three words to describe yourself.

Passionate, ambitious, and unique.

Where is your favorite place to eat in SF?

My favorite place to eat in SF is Clay Oven, which is an Indian restaurant in West Portal. A group of my friends and I have been going there every couple of months since my Freshman year at SFSU and it is absolutely amazing.

Do you have any hidden talents? If so, what are they?

Not too many people know that I played Varsity tennis all throughout tennis. I am currently still an avid tennis player and enthusiast.

What dance do you practice in the mirror?

I like to pretend that I am Ciara when I am in front of the mirror. I love hip hop but am a terrible dancer. However, when I step in front of my mirror I imagine that I am a mini Beyonce!

What is something you hate that everyone else loves?

Something that everyone seems to like that I am not a fan of is Cards Against Humanity. I find the game extremely culturally insensitive at times. I try to like the game, but I absolutely can’t stand it!

If you can veto one law, which one would it be?

If I could veto one passed piece of legislation it would have to be Prop 13. Prop 13 has taken a lot of taxes off the market which could be used to better fund public higher education.

What is your favorite snack?

My favorite snack since I was a child has been apple sauce. I absolutely love everything about it and every time I eat it, it puts me in a fantastic mood!

We hope you enjoyed this edition of Meet Your Board! If you ever see Naeemah on campus, make sure to say hello! She’d love getting to know you!

See you next week, gators! And HAPPY SPRING BREAK!
